Time management is a skill that anyone and everyone can find to be useful. It is an especially important skill that I have had to master myself as a Small Business Owner, Decorator, and Blogger. With so much work jammed into each day, I have had to come up with a few tricks up my sleeve and habits in order to ensure that I am consistently staying on task. These have become what I would call my "tricks of the time management trade" and I think now would be the perfect time ( pun fully intended ) for me to share my tricks with you! Trick #1: Start Early

I have learned that the days where I get up and start my day bright and early are my most productive days. So this quickly became a rule I set for myself. I now love to wake up early and make the absolute most of my day. Before, I complained often of there not being enough hours in a day and while I still believe that is true, I have found a way to give myself a few more in the mornings. No complaints here!

Trick #2: Plan Ahead

Maybe it is my OCD showing a bit, but I have always been one to try and plan out every little detail. More so, I swear by it! When I plan ahead of time for every possible scenario and think through any need or road blocks that may arise, I am ten times more prepared to take on any task. Since the majority of what I do, in terms of decorating, happens in others homes and properties, planning ahead means that if I have a need for a measuring tape I have one already on me, if I am struggling to describe a design to a client, I have a pen and sketch pad with me to draw it out for them, and if I need to secure something to a wall, I've got my drill and screws ready to go. It will always save me time if I plan things out before hand.

Trick #3: Prioritize

I find that this goes hand in hand with planning ahead. I am the Queen of making to do lists. In fact a popular gift that I receive is notebooks because those who know me know that I will make some great use out of them. To do lists help me to prioritize my thoughts and the tasks that I know I need to get done. I will even go as far as to number the tasks on my lists to make sure that the most important ones get accomplished first. I also find it helpful to always finish my current task before trying to tackle the next. This will keep me from forgetting any last touches on each task, I just take care of it then and there instead of putting anything off.

Trick #4: Set Deadlines

I actually mentioned this in my post Blogging With A Full Time Job, but setting deadlines is a point that I feel the need to stress again. The reason that I feel deadlines are so important is because they begin to give you a sense of structure to accomplish your tasks. Having a deadline will give you a solid reason to set aside time for those tasks you may not be looking forward to, but I guarantee you will get them done. Try it for yourself and see just how much you'll get done once you start setting deadlines.

 

Trick #5: Know When To Turn It Off

Being self employed is no easy feat. Not only is there no one else for me to delegate tasks to, there is also no way for me to just clock out of my day of work. There always seems to be so much to do and so little time to do it, and while it is always tempting just to pull a few all-nighters here and there to get everything done at once, I have to know when to just turn off the work for the night. Trust me, it is much easier said then done, but it will be worth it in the long run for a number of reasons. First of all, in a creative field, my quality of work could be seriously compromised if I am constantly exhausted from all-nighters. Second of all, the more late nights I pull the more stressed I would find myself. In all, it is more beneficial for my business if I just turn the work off at an appropriate hour and then get right back to the grind bright and early the next morning!

Trick #6: Always Have A Watch On

It is safe to say that when you love what you do, it is easy to get carried away. This is the main reason why I always have a unique watch on my wrist!   1. Great tips! My best time management strategy is that I try to do everything way early. I create blog posts a month in advance and I did the same thing as much as I could when I was in school.
